How to Clean and Maintain Artificial Grass in Dubai

One of the biggest draws of artificial grass is how low-maintenance it is — especially here in Dubai, where real lawns can be a constant battle against the heat, sand, and sky-high water bills.

But low maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance. To keep your artificial lawn looking its best year-round, a bit of occasional care goes a long way. At Mazegrass, we’ve helped homeowners across Dubai install and enjoy their artificial lawns — and we've picked up plenty of practical tips along the way.

So whether you’ve just had your new lawn installed or you’ve had it down for a while, here’s what you need to know to keep it looking fresh, clean, and long-lasting.

1. Give It a Quick Brush Every Few Weeks

Dubai’s breezes have a habit of carrying all sorts of things into your garden — sand, leaves, the odd but of plastic. A soft brush or a stiff broom (nothing metal) is perfect for giving your grass a gentle once-over. Brushing against the direction of the fibres also helps to lift the pile and stop it from looking flat over time.

If your garden is surrounded by trees or you’re in a windier area like Arabian Ranches or Damac Hills, a quick brush every week or so can keep things neat without much effort.

2. Rinse Away Dust and Pet Mess

Between sandstorms, foot traffic, and pets doing their thing, your artificial lawn can occasionally do with a rinse. A garden hose is all you need to keep things clean.

Got a dog or cat? No problem. Mazegrass products are pet-friendly and easy to wash down. Just:

  • Remove solid waste as you normally would

  • Rinse the area with a hose

  • Use a mild soap and water mix if needed (no harsh chemicals)

For regular clean-ups, most people find once or twice a month is more than enough — even less if the garden isn’t used much.

3. Deal with Spills and Stains Early

Whether it's a dropped cup of coffee, a BBQ marinade mishap, or sun cream off the kids, most stains on artificial grass are easy to sort out.

Here’s what we recommend:

  • Blot liquids with a cloth or paper towel

  • Rinse with water and a mild detergent

  • For oilier stains, warm soapy water usually does the trick

Because Mazegrass products are made with UV-stabilised fibres and durable backings, you won’t damage them by spot cleaning. Just avoid bleach or anything too harsh.

4. Watch Out for Heat Sources

Mazegrass is designed to handle Dubai’s sun — all our grasses come with a 10-year UV warranty, so fading isn’t an issue. That said, like most artificial grass, it doesn’t love extreme heat underneath.

Avoid placing hot items like fire pits, charcoal BBQs, or chimeneas directly on the grass. If you’re using outdoor furniture with metal feet or wheels, try using small pads or furniture mats to prevent pressure marks, especially in summer.

5. Keep the Drainage Clear

A well-installed artificial lawn (like the ones we do at Mazegrass) will already have good drainage. But if sand or leaves start to build up, water might not pass through as quickly.

If you notice puddling after a rare downpour, it’s usually nothing serious — just brush the surface to clear any blockage. A quick rinse can help shift finer dust that may be compacting the drainage holes.

6. Avoid Weed Growth at the Edges

Artificial grass makes it much harder for weeds to grow, but the odd one can still pop up around the edges — especially if you’ve got real plants or flowerbeds nearby.

A quick pull usually does the trick. If you use weedkiller, go for a pet-safe option and apply it sparingly. Our installations include weed membranes underneath to help reduce this further, but no garden is ever 100% weed-proof.

Takeaway: Keep It Simple

Here’s the honest truth: maintaining artificial grass in Dubai really is straightforward. If you:

  • Brush it now and then

  • Give it a rinse when it needs it

  • Stay on top of the odd bit of sand or debris

…you’ll get years of use out of it, with barely any effort.

At Mazegrass, we’ve seen customers with the same lawn looking as good five years on as it did the week it was installed. A little TLC goes a long way.
