Astroturf Carpet in Dubai: Which Type Do You Need?

Compare temporary astroturf carpet with landscaping grass in Dubai. Learn which type suits events, balconies and gardens, plus what to check before buying.

By Maze Grass

Artificial grass running to a clean paved edge beside a villa terrace and timber decking in Dubai.

Astroturf carpet in Dubai is a phrase covering two quite different products. One is a thin, lightweight roll for events, exhibition stands and tents, which goes down for a few days and comes straight back up. The other is landscaping-grade artificial grass supplied on a roll and cut by the metre for balconies, terraces and gardens. Cover a temporary space and the event carpet does the job. Put it somewhere people walk week after week and you want the landscaping grade.

The two are separated by pile height and stitch rate. Event carpet is short and sparse, while landscaping grasses run from 33 mm to 42 mm. Get both figures in writing, then hold a sample before you commit.

Two products are sold as astroturf carpet in Dubai

Grass carpet is the lighter of the two. It has a short, flat pile and a uniform colour, and it rolls out in minutes and comes back up just as quickly, which is what an events team needs. You'll see it on exhibition floors, market stalls, temporary walkways, majlis setups and inside marquees. Lightweight grass carpet is likely to flatten quickly in an area with regular foot traffic, so its value is how fast it goes down and how cheaply it covers a large floor.

The landscaping roll is the same product we install in villa gardens, supplied by the metre rather than as a finished installation. Maze Grass holds four grades: Duramax at 33 mm, Sienna and Milan at 35 mm, and Naples at 42 mm, the highest pile in the range along with the highest density and stitch rate. Milan is the best seller.

Stitch rate per square metre is the grass density, and it's a measure of how thick the grass is. The denser the grass, the more blades in every square metre, so it looks more lush and gives more cushion underfoot. Pile height alone won't tell you how a sample feels.

Astro turf carpet for events, balconies or gardens?

For a stand, a pop-up shop, a marquee or a stall running for a week or a month, grass carpet is the sensible choice. It's made to go down quickly and taken away again.

Anything in regular use calls for the landscaping grade. Balconies, roof terraces, villa gardens, the run between the house and the pool, the corner where children play: those surfaces take direct sun, daily foot traffic and a hosing down every few weeks. Renting rather than owning makes no difference, because a balcony you sit on every evening is a space in daily use.

If you're weighing up the vocabulary rather than the products, our guide to what each of these product names means works through them supplier by supplier.

How is an astroturf roll installed on tiles, concrete or screed?

On a hard surface it's a dry fit, one of the three types of ground preparation we work to: installation only, with nothing underneath to prepare. A sound, stable and properly draining tiled, concrete or screeded surface will not normally require a new aggregate base. Cracked or loose tiles want repairing first, because an artificial grass roll follows whatever sits under it, and a floor that ponds water needs the fall correcting first.

The perimeter is glued rather than nailed. Fixing the grass only with pins or nails can allow the perimeter to move or pull back over time, particularly as the material responds to seasonal temperature changes. Silica sand goes in at 4 to 5 kg per square metre, brushed up through the pile, where it holds the fibres upright, absorbs heat and stops static building up. Joins are bonded with tape and adhesive, and they're worth marking on a sketch so they fall clear of the main sight lines.

Balconies and terraces add a few checks. Keep the drainage outlets clear and confirm water still runs towards them once the grass is in place, because water trapped under a roll has nowhere to go. Some towers restrict what can be fixed to a balcony floor, so read your tenancy or building rules first. Where that applies, a removable installation cut to size and fixed only at the edges lifts cleanly when you leave.

Request these details before you order

Order by the metre with no specification attached and you can't compare two quotations. One document covering the points below gives you something to hold a supplier to.

Information to requestWhy it matters
Product nameColour descriptions vary by supplier; a name ties the quotation to one grade.
Pile height in millimetresSets how the surface looks and feels underfoot.
Stitch rate per square metreTells you how thick and cushioned the grass will be.
UV test informationShows the fibres were stabilised for this climate.
Test covers fibres and backingBoth degrade in UAE sun; usually only fibres are quoted.
Installation methodGlued and pinned perimeters behave differently over time.
Silica sand rate per square metreIt belongs on the document, not decided on the day.
Join positionsMarked on a sketch, they stay clear of the sight lines.
Warranty term and coverageThe term depends on which grass is specified.

An accurate quotation needs the area measured on site, the surface there now, the access route, and whether you want supply only or installation.

What affects astro turf grass prices in Dubai?

The grade is the first variable. A 42 mm grass with a high stitch rate contains considerably more material than a 33 mm one, and that carries through every square metre.

The surface is the largest swing in most quotations. Tiles, concrete and screed in good condition need installation only, while sand, gravel or natural grass needs a full black sand base at 7 to 10 cm, levelled and compacted, with the cement gluing edge around the perimeter.

Access changes the labour, since a ground-floor terrace and a fourteenth-floor balcony are not the same delivery.

Then there's who installs it. We supply grass on its own where you already have a contractor, with installation quoted separately. Stock is held in our own warehouse in Dubai Industrial City and delivered on our own vehicles.

Ask how the grass is UV stabilised

Poor UV stabilisation is one of the most common reasons low-grade artificial grass deteriorates prematurely in the UAE. Poorly stabilised fibres can become brittle and break down much sooner than a product designed for these conditions, at which point the grass looks short and the backing can show through. The backing matters as much as the fibres, and it's the part suppliers are least often asked about.

None of it's visible on delivery day, because a roll with weak UV stabilisation looks much like a good one when it arrives.

We import our grass from Europe, where chemical regulation in manufacturing is strict and enforced, and it's independently tested by SGS for chemical content, heavy metals, UV stability and fire performance. Certificates are available on request.

Does astroturf get hot on a balcony or terrace?

From June through August, yes, it's too hot to walk on barefoot in the middle of the day. So are tiling, stone and timber decking in the same sun. A balcony that falls into shade in the afternoon cools quickly and is comfortable well before evening, and thirty seconds with a hose drops the temperature straight away. Silica sand absorbs heat, and lighter tones hold less of it. Our Stay Cool yarn runs up to 15°C cooler underfoot than conventional artificial grass in comparable conditions, with the reflective technology extruded into the yarn rather than coated on, so it can't wash off.

FAQs

Can I install astroturf carpet myself?

Yes, and plenty of customers do. Get the surface clean and sound, cut the pieces so the joins fall clear of the sight lines, glue the perimeter and brush the silica sand through. We'll send the written specification on request.

Is grass carpet suitable for a balcony?

Only where it's being covered temporarily, for a party or a short let. A balcony in regular use wants a landscaping grade, which holds its pile under foot traffic.

Is temporary grass carpet cheaper?

Per square metre, yes, and for a genuinely short-term space that is the right answer. On a surface in daily use it is likely to flatten well before a landscaping grade.

How is astroturf carpet cleaned?

Brush the pile upright every few weeks and rinse it with a hose. There's no mowing, watering or reseeding.

Can I see samples before ordering?

Yes. Sample packs are free and come from the manufacturer rather than cut from a roll, so what you hold is what arrives. Collect one from our Al Quoz showroom or ask us to bring it out.

How long does landscaping-grade artificial grass last?

At least 10 years, provided the fibres and backing are properly UV stabilised. The grass carries a manufacturer's warranty, and the term depends on which grass is specified.

Does artificial grass become hot in Dubai?

In peak summer it does, like every uncovered surface here. Afternoon shade, a hose, silica sand and Stay Cool yarn all reduce it.
